Two-Stage Screw Air Compressor

Two-stage compression splits the work between two sets of rotors. The first stage compresses air to an intermediate pressure, cools it, then the second stage compresses it to the final pressure. This lowers discharge temperature and uses less energy per unit of air produced.

How It Works

In a single-stage compressor, air goes from atmospheric pressure to full working pressure in one pass. The compression ratio is high, and so is the heat generated.

The two-stage design uses a smaller first-stage rotor set to compress air to about 3 bar, then an intercooler brings the temperature down, and a larger second-stage rotor set finishes the compression to 7–13 bar.

Because each stage does less work and the intercooler removes heat between stages, the total energy input is lower. Measured specific energy is typically 12–15% better than a comparable single-stage machine at the same pressure.
