Chinese Air Compressor Manufacturers Comparing Sollant, Kaishan, SCR, and Denair

Rotary Screw Compressors

Kaishan is publicly listed, Shenzhen Stock Exchange ticker 300257, audited CNINFO filings disclosing CapEx on rotor grinding equipment. The other three are private. About a third of compressor brands on Alibaba are trading companies with no factory. These four have real operations.

Rotor Grinding

Fewer than ten factories in China produce screw compressor airends above 22 kW that reach 16,000 hours. Several share tooling heritage from 1990s GHH-Rand and SRM technology transfers. Two brands at a Lagos trade show can contain airends from the same Zhejiang supplier, differing in cabinet paint.

Kaishan grinds rotors at Quzhou on Holroyd-class CNC, machines housings, sets bearing preloads. On PM-VSD models, rotor profiles have speed-dependent sealing characteristics because gas dynamics through clearances change with tip speed. A profile an airend supplier designed for fixed-speed duty at 3,000 rpm behaves differently at 1,200 rpm. Kaishan shapes profiles knowing the motor and speed range. Everyone buying airends takes the supplier's general-purpose profile.

Kaishan also feeds test stand data back into grinding calibration. A batch measuring below target triggers a parameter change on the grinders. Companies buying airends run incoming inspection, which rejects bad parts but has no mechanism to influence the supplier's next batch. European grinding tolerances run 3 to 5 microns on profile. Kaishan's Quzhou line runs 8 to 12. The energy penalty of the remaining gap on a 37 kW machine accumulates on the electricity bill over years, dispersed across months, untraced.

Kaishan's single-screw installed base in mining and cement was built on symmetric radial loading versus the asymmetric forces twin-screw male rotors carry. Dual in-house capability across both architectures now, proprietary profiles in each, two decades and hundreds of millions of RMB to build.

SCR at High Pressure

At 13 bar gauge, single-stage compression runs roughly 14:1 ratio. Discharge temperatures push oil toward oxidation limits. SCR's two-stage at the same pressure runs two steps around 3.7:1 each with intercooling. Temperature gap exceeds 30°C. Oil oxidation depends exponentially on sustained temperature. Over 40,000 operating hours at that gap, the divergence in drain intervals, bearing surface condition, and seal integrity makes the purchase price difference between SCR and a single-stage alternative look small. The crossover where two-stage pulls ahead sits around 10 bar. Below 8 bar the extra mechanical complexity offsets much of the thermal gain.

SCR buys airends with GHH-Rand profile lineage, puts engineering into intercooler design, inter-stage pressure ratio selection, dual-injection oil circuit calibration. On the best two-stage PM-VSD models, SCR competes with European machines at steep discounts. Modbus and Profibus integration on upper-tier controllers serves food, pharmaceutical, and electronics manufacturing where the compressor reports to plant SCADA or DCS.

Kaishan's single-screw reaches lower temperatures through balanced loading and less friction heat. At moderate pressures comparable thermal environments. At 13 bar, staged compression carries an advantage balanced loading cannot close.

Denair and Sollant

Denair has a wider catalog (7.5 kW to above 200 kW), has been exporting longer, ships to over 100 countries from Shanghai. Multiple airend suppliers feed that breadth, so the airend inside a model number can shift between batches. Sollant is an integration platform with maximum component flexibility, pricing that undercuts Denair, direct sales with no distributor margin or support. Neither has made thermal management or compression architecture a design priority. Both size cooling for 40°C ambient. Both compete on price and accessibility below 10 bar. Purchase orders for either need to list airend, bearings, inverter, oil base stock by brand and model because batch variation can change any of them.

Inverters

VSD compressors spend most hours at partial load, and at partial load the inverter firmware determines efficiency more than the airend. A generic drive oscillates motor speed around the setpoint, wasting energy on repeated rotor acceleration and deceleration, putting torque transients through bearings. A compressor-specific drive from ABB, Siemens, or Danfoss with an accurate motor model holds a narrow speed band. The consumption gap at half load runs 8 to 12 percent with identical airends and motors. The drive cost spread is 5 to 6 percent of total machine cost. Nobody asks about inverters at the quotation stage. Everybody should.

Oil, Bearings, Cooler, Filter

Airend bearings sit submerged in oil at 70 to 95°C. Particles above 5 microns grind raceways. Oxidized oil loses viscosity and generates acids. The cooler governs temperature, the filter governs particle load, the oil spec governs oxidation resistance. Analyzing bearing quality without analyzing the oil environment produces procurement decisions that look rational on a spreadsheet and fail in the field.

Oil analysis at USD 25 to 40 per sample catches degradation months ahead of controller alarms. Separator differential pressure on every controller screen tells the operator whether the element is wasting more energy than a replacement would cost. Most installations ignore both.

Kaishan's 46°C ambient rating and oversized coolers keep oil cooler under adverse conditions. SCR's two-stage keeps temperatures lower through thermodynamic staging.

Parts, Production, Shipping

Kaishan stocks consumables regionally across four continents. SCR parts depend on local distributor capability. Denair ships from Shanghai, three to six weeks ocean freight. Sollant goes direct through WeChat or WhatsApp.

April through November is the stable Chinese manufacturing window. Container specs: floor anchoring, bracing, anti-corrosion packaging, photo documentation. At 1,000 meters and 40°C a compressor delivers around 17 percent below catalog FAD, which none of the four prominently disclose.

Cost

Airend is 30 to 35 percent of machine cost, motor 15 to 18, inverter on VSD models 8 to 12, assembly labor 3 to 5, so price gaps trace to component selection. Energy dominates ownership cost. Above 4,000 annual hours, efficiency drives procurement. Below 2,000, purchase price weighs heavier.

Failure and Maintenance

An installation error can destroy an airend at 500 hours. A neglected intake filter can cause overheating at 3,000 when the restriction pushes compression ratios above design. A machine that sailed through 8,000 hours can develop bearing noise at 9,000 because the oil analysis program that would have caught rising iron counts was never started. Field failures develop messily, with overlapping causes and long incubation periods. A Kaishan with premium bearings in a dusty shed running mineral oil with no analysis program accumulates damage faster than a Sollant with mid-tier bearings in a clean, temperature-controlled room with quarterly sampling and a technician who reads the separator differential screen. The compressed air system surrounding the compressor (receiver, piping, dryer, filtration, condensate, leaks) influences delivered performance as heavily as anything inside the cabinet.
